English Language Broadcast - What rejecting the gender binary means for gender equality - 25/03/25
'Gender identity' is a concept that has slowly been growing in popularity over the past decade or so, gradually entering the mainstream. And alongside the categories of male and female, the gender binary has come into question... Now, some people refer to themselves as non-binary, as not belonging to either gender. And the discussion around gender has become such that it's entered the political space, as we saw in the American elections, and in Donald Trump's first address to congress, where he stated that there were only 2 genders: male and female. Today, we're going to take a look at the gender binary and the rejection of it with Barbara Wisman, professor at the University of Illinois. Earlier this month, she visited Spain's Center for Sociological Research, where she discussed Category X project, which dives into this third category, outside of the male and female binary. English Language Broadcast - A new code of ethics for Spain's museums and their mummies - 13/03/25
Respect for the dead is something that has always been a part of human society, but whose dead do we respect? Which dead? And how do we respect them? In Spain, a discussion surrounding the displaying of human remains in museums has been gently snowballing over the past few years. Just last month, Spain's National Archeology Museum withdrew 'the guanche mummy' from display. The mummy is believed to date from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries AD, and belongs to a man between 30 and 34 years. For now, it has been removed from public display and the museum has no plans to return it to the public any time soon... The State Museums released a t report on the day it removed the mummy from display... A letter of commitment to the ethical treatment of human remains. And in today's broadcast, we hope to get into the ethics and new rules surrounding the display of human remains, with the President of the International Council of Museums here in Spain, María Auxiliadora Llamas. English Language Broadcast - 50 years of Women's Days, and since a dictator's death - 08/03/25
It's been 50 years since the UN declared the 8th of March as International Women's Day. But in Spain, the year 1975 carries a different meaning. It's the year the dictator Francisco Franco died. This means that Spain, the situation for women was different to the situation in the rest of Europe and the rest of the world. Women were a group that suffered their own kind of oppression: their liberties were limited, attatched to men's, and women were even imprisoned for adultery, for having abortions and because of their sexualities. In today's broadcast, in remembrance of these past fifty years, we talk to Justa Montero, who has been on the frontlines of the feminist cause in Spain since 1973, and remains active today.
