What goes better with a pint of beer than an interesting conversation? And not many things are more interesting than science! Pint of Science is the international festival that brings researchers out of their labs and into your our bars, making science accessible for everyone. This initiative arrived in Spain ten years ago and since then, it has spread through all the regions in our country. This edition took place from the 19th to the 21st of May and was packed by fascinating talks, fresh ideas and, of course, good beer. To tell us more about this initiative and its impact in Spain we spoke with Sarinka Parry-Jones, head of Economic and Public Policy at the British Embassy in Madrid, and with Sandra Medrano, cardiovascular researcher and national communications lead for Pint of Science Spain. When Donald Trump announced tarrifs on EU goods over a month ago, Spain's worries at once went to our wine and olive oil... today we're going to talk about our olive oil with the Executive Director of the International Olive Oil Council, an organization that is based here in Madrid. Every year, the province of Segovia becomes the capital of the often underrated art of puppetry. The Titirimundi festival has been reclaiming the cultural value of this form of theater for 40 years, and this week they are back with a festival full of magic. Production manager, Ana Roivant, ed us this broadcast to tell us more. For almost 30 years, Australian theater company Back to Back Theater has been exploring themes around disability and neurodivergence. For the first time their play "The shadow whose prey the hunter becomes" arrives in Madrid. A play that revolves around disability, human rights, sexual policies and AI. It will run on the 9th and 10th of May in cultural center Condeduque. Director Bruce Gladwin ed us in this broadcast to tell us about the play. Escuchar audio

For 22 years now, the festival Documenta Madrid has been bringing contemporary and experimental documentary from the whole world closer to Madrid's audiences. This year the focus is on archive, memory and new looks at social and political cinema. Luis Parés, art director at Cineteca Matadero, tells us more about what they have planned for this edition. After that, we look into the not-so-bright side of the Spanish audiovisual industry. Director Almudena Carracedo tells us about the report "After silence. Impact of Sexual abuse and sexual violence against women in the cinema and audiovisual industry" which was released last month by the the Spanish Ascociation of Women Filmmakers and in Audiovisual Media, CIMA. It's been an eventful couple of weeks. Last Monday, Spain suffered a Peninsula-wide blackout. The previous Monday, we got news of the ing of Pope Francis. This week the conclave to elect a new pope begins on Wednesday, with 133 cardenals, 80 of them appointed by the late Pope Francis... In today's broadcast, we'll hear from the director general of the Pablo VI Foundation, Jesús Avezuela about what we can expect from the next few days. And after that... Spain's finest flamenco will be on tour in the US and Canada during the months of May and June with Authentic Flamenco, a Teatro Real project. On Monday, Spain went dark. Two days ago, at 12:33PM, the entirety of the Iberian Peninsula lost power completely. Mainland Spain, Portugal and part of shut down from one moment to the next. Every home, business, traffic light, train, lost electricity. Hospitals worked with back-up generators, while traffic jams lasted for hours. We are Spanish National Radio's English broadcast, and we will be dedicating today's broadcast to explain how Spain went through the crisis and what the aftershocks are. We also talk to Pablo Ledesma, Associate Professor of Electric Engineering of the Carlos III University of Madrid, about what might have caused the blackout, and whether it might happen again. The International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday in April. A day to encourage girls and young women to pursue technological degrees and raise awareness about the gender gap in ICT. In Spain, less than 20% of people who work in tech are women, and only 1.5% of girls want to pursue a career in STEM, according to the latest survey conducted by the National Obervatory of Technology and Society. Ester Maestro, programs director at the "Cibervoluntarios" foundation, ed us in this broadcast to tell us about their project "Innovadoras TIC" (women innovators ITC). To celebrate this year's World Book Day, we visited a unique bookstore located in the heart of Madrid. The Secret Kingdoms is the only bookstore in the city with a catalog exclusively in English. As consciousness about environmental issues grows, companies and institutions are becoming more aware of the necessity of developing sustainable and ethical business models. The fashion industry is one of the most environmentally unfriendly. Its impact is enormous in of water consumption and carbon emissions. That's why more and more associations are raising their voices and coming up with initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability in fashion. One of these projects is the Circular Sustainable Fashion Week Madrid, which will be celebrating its 9th edition from the 21st to the 26th of April. Paloma López, director of the project, ed us to tell us about it. After that we learn about "torrijas", a traditional Spanish Holy Week dessert, with Roberto Hernandez, chef at Latasia and winner of this year's "Madrid's Best Traditional Torrija contest". "In a certain village in La Mancha, which I do not wish to name" is probably one of the most well-known openings in literature. And more than 400 years after its publication, Miguel de Cervantes's "Don Quijote de la Mancha" continues inspiring literary works. This is the case of American writer Roy Lotz, who took inspiration from the Cervantine classic to write a satiric novel about American Society. He ed us here to tell us about "Don Bigote". "Las sombras ya tienen nombre", the shadows already have names partly because he gave it to them. In between hope and melancholy, Spanish photographer Samuel Nacar, portrayed those who were released from the Syrian prisons after the fall of the Al-Asad Regime in December of 2024. His work, featured in the Revista 5W, was recognized by the World Press Photo this year, in the the category Stories of Western, Central and South Asia. Samuel Nacar ed us to tell us about his work. Antonio Machado is probably one of the most important personalities in Spanish literature. The youngest in the Generation of 1898, his poetry was characterized by an intimate symbolism. During the Spanish Civil War, he exiled to where he died shortly after, very far from his brother Manuel Machado, who stayed in Spain. Also a poet, he continued his work at the service of the regime. Two brothers divided by the war, a reflection of the country at the time. Now, a graphic novel reconciles the Machado brothers in the afterlife. The third installment in the trilogy about Spanish poets, which also includes Federico Garcia Lorca and Miguel Hernandez. Author Carles Esquembre closes off this stage with "Los hermanos Machado. Anti-feminism, misogyny, male supremacy... Some characterists of the so-called "manosphere". A term used to describe online communities which revolve around and reclaim masculinity. Although this movement used to be in the margins, now it has arrived to the mainstream and it is becoming more and more popular, especially among younger men and teenagers. Once again the Atapuerca archeological site, in the region of Burgos, was the location of a groundbreaking discovery... Bone fragments of the earliest human face in Western Europe were found in the Sima del Elefante Site. To tell us more about this discovery and what it means we spoke with María Martinón-Torres, director of the National Center for Research and Human Evolution in Burgos. From more than 5 thousand applications from 89 countries, Ángel Luis González, was one of the finalists for the Global Teacher Prize awarded by the Varkey Foundation. The only Spaniard among the 50 best teachers in the world. The Prize was eventually awarded to Mansour Al Mansour, from Saudi Arabia, but that does not take any merit from Angel and the work that he has been doing in our country.
