Lunar eclipses have long been associated with superstitions and folklore. In some cultures, a lunar eclipse is thought to be caused by a celestial dragon or snake swallowing the moon. This event is often seen as an omen of bad things to come, and people will go to great lengths to ward off the evil spirits that are thought to be brought about by an eclipse.

In the Kathopanishad, a young boy named Nachiketa goes to the abode of Death to learn the secret of death. Death grants him three boons, and Nachiketa uses his first boon to learn the secret of death. Death reveals to him that the secret of death is that there is no death. There is only immortality. In the second boon, Nachiketa asks to be reunited with his father, who had died. Death grants his request, and Nachiketa is reunited with his father in the afterlife.  In the third boon, Nachiketa asks to be freed from the cycle of birth and death. Death grants his request, and Nachiketa achieves immortality.
