Antumi is a professor at several universities, including New York University. His studies center on African communities in Spain and promoting awareness of African culture and history. In this episode, Antumi walks us through the history and impact of African people in Spain. He tells us that in 3000 BC the entire population of Spain was black and remained largely so until many of them were expelled during the dethronement of Carlos III in the 17th century. Antumi talks about Spain’s conscious effort to become more European and erase its African history, to the point where today, only four public universities in Spain offer African history courses. Patrice is an IE alumna and has long been an advocate for civil rights, particularly in the area of girls’ education and women’s leadership. This stems from a childhood riddled with conflict, growing up amid the Liberian civil wars. Kwesi Amoak is the founder and executive director of Mpuntusem, a Pan-African development and communication organization. He is also currently doing a PhD in African Studies at the University of Ghana. Kwesi longs for teaching to be turned on its head and taken back to its roots as more of a sharing of knowledge rather than one person standing at the front of the classroom assuming a position of power.
