Circular Economy Principles for Embodied Energy
Circular Economy Principles for Embodied Energy
Danielle Tensley Tingley is a Professor of Architectural Engineering at the University of Sheffield, her research focuses on how to reduce the embodied carbon of our buildings. Today, cement alone s for 8% of the world emissions - which is actually more than cars! If we are to move to a low carbon economy, we inevitably won't be able to stop just at operational energy, we will need to also find the methods to reduce embodied energy down to zero also. In this episode we discuss: The circular economy of construction materials The feasibility of deg for deconstruction, reuse of existing buildings and down cycling of construction materials How to improve the efficiency of material use in structural design Danielle is an expert in an increasingly important field, it was a pleasure speaking to her, I hope you learn as much as I did.   If you want to learn more about Danielle and her fantastic projects, go to: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/civil/staff/academic/dttingley   We want to learn more about you! Understanding the Technological Forces that will Shape our Future
Understanding the Technological Forces that will Shape our Future
Kevin Kelly is the founder of Wired magazine and author of the book 'The Inevitable - Understanding the 12 technological forces that will shape our future. The buildings industry has been stagnant for many decades and ripe for disruption. Understanding the technological forces will better prepare yourself for some of the changes that are on the horizon.   Today is the best time in history to innovate. Kelly tells us that the people in 2050 will be saying "can you imagine how awesome it would be to innovate in 2016? It was a wide open frontier!". People, who do not take up the opportunities on offer will respond, "oh if only I realized how possible things were back then". Most of the products running the lives, of the people in 2050 are surely not around today.   The Inevitable explains the 12, subtle technological forces that are going to shape our futures. One concept explored is artificial intelligence. He says it doesn't matter what job you have, the robot take over is going to be epic. Success will go to those who best optimize the process of working with bots and machines, not the ones fighting these changes.   This is an episode taken from my other podcast, What You Will Learn.
