Tech Talk Roundtable 09-04 | Asking the Right Questions
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description How can we push students past simple recall into deeper thought and engagement? Is it about teaching content? Or should we be asking more questions? If so, what questions should we be asking? Do you think WE know? Would you like to listen to today’s podcast and see if we can find out? Lessons Learned Chris – Playing cards, a sheet of paper, and an imagination are excellent tools for classroom team building, and spending a class building a team will pay dividends many times over. The Quiet Year: https://www.mikuru.ru/files/rpg/the-quiet-year/The%20Quiet%20Year%20EN.pdf Dennis – Not a new lesson learned, but did get a chance this week to introduce some teachers to this wonderful tool, which is incredibly useful if you are working on curriculum documents or your school’s WASC Report. The education jargon generator. https://www.sciencegeek.net/lingo.html Daniel – Using the Trim function[1] in Mac Finder to edit the ends of your videos and audio. Quick and Easy. Fun Fact About Socrates (SO-CRATES) Not an attractive guy. Described as having the “mouth of a frog or donkey” and “bulging eyes that don’t track” Not a teacher in the traditional sense. He was known to say that he doesn’t have information to transmit and that’s why he’s asking questions. Never wrote anything down. All we know about him comes from s of his students like Plato and Aristophanes. Could have avoided trial and execution completely byby going into exile but chose uncompromising civil disobedience. “O men of Athens, I say to you … either acquit me or not; but whatever you do, know that I shall never alter my ways, not even if I have to die many times.” Source: 7 Facts About Socrates, the Enigmatic Greek Street Philosopher | HowStuffWorks Notes & Links Article: https://www.edutopia.org/article/question-teachers-should-ask-often-possible How might this “How do you know?” technique be applied in the following models: 1) Distance Learning 2) Blended Learning 3) Asynchronous (Self-paced, online) Learning Another link shared by Chris: Bringing What Worked During Virtual Learning Into Grade 3-12 Classrooms | Edutopia

Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description How YOU doin’? Nǐ hǎo? Estas bien? Wie Gehts? We hope you are well. And we’re pretty sure if you’re here listening to us LIVE AT ACAMIS that you are well because you must already have the green code and the Covid test results to prove it. As we continue our 9th year of talking about tech in education, we want to not just talk ing Tech Well, but also talk about BEING well as we use Tech. Are you finding that healthy balance between tech and no tech, screens and no screens, online and offline? If not, then you came to the right place because … actually, we were going to ask YOU for ideas. So, I guess it’s the blind leading the blind… Lessons Learned Chris Nolan Ryan and Gaylord Perry Dennis – Do not disturb mode on your iPhone. We all need to unplug, but we also want that important call or message to get through. Add exceptions to your Do Not Disturb. Allow calls from a specific group or by DND for specific s. https://www.theverge.com/2019/9/26/20883331/iphone-do-not-disturb-mode-exceptions-how-to And coming in iOS 15: Focus Mode! Tech Talk Roundtable 09-01 | Will it Blend?
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description Whether you’re back with students in the classroom or still working remotely, teaching and learning continues. As we begin our 9th Season of podcasting we know now, more than ever, that learning can’t happen without relationships. We’ve also learned the hard way that many of our traditional classroom practices fall flat when we face the fact that face to face must often be forfeited in favor of forging a foundation for future fortitude. We invite you to us as we fabricate a forum of sorts around the idea of blended learning, taking a look at our current practices and asking the question, “Will it Blend?” Lessons Learned Chris – Don’t be owned by your circumstances. Dennis – When a system says it “integrates” with another system that rarely means what you think it means. Read the fine print. Daniel – What is our infinite game in education? – Simon Sinek. Fun Fact Will it Blend? (The Web TV Show) Started in 2006, this is a viral marketing campaign demonstrating the Blendtec Total Blender. In the show, Tom Dickson, the founder, attempts to blend various unusual items in order to show off the power of his blender. Top Viewed Blended items include: Golf Balls, Hockey Pucks, iPad, iPhone, rake handle Notes & Links True or False: Schools that rely on the direct instruction model have the biggest difficulty transitioning to Online (Distance) Learning. Having a teacher lecture live over Zoom is just as effective as a live lecture F2F in the classroom. At the end of the 2020 school year (4 months into Covid) we shared some takeaway lessons and lessons learned. Which technology practices and strategies will blend? What would we change or update knowing what we know now? Link to Podcast 720 from June 2020. Chris – Stop thinking “classroom.” Stop trying to recreate the face-to-face experience. Whatever your opinion concerning John Dewey’s vision of what “school” should be, his understanding that education happens all around us is spot on. Once you drop the “classroom” in your brain, possibilities abound. Tech Talk Roundtable 08-12 | A World Without Tech, Amen!
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description In the establishing shot of the movie Transcendence, people use keyboards as door stops and discarded computers litter the streets. Mankind is slowly recovering from tech-addiction, returning to a life of face-to-face communication and the petty inconveniences of a tech-free world. While that world may be a dream for some and a nightmare for others, we take a Waldorf Schools’ view of classrooms without tech. What are the essentials of teaching? What happens when tech isn’t there to these essentials? Lessons Learned Chris – Mmhmm 2.0 like chunky monkey delicious! https://www.mmhmm.app/blog/introducing-mmhmm-2-0-chunky-make-video-work-for-you Mixed live with pre-recorded Duel video Presets to keep a “look” iOS app coming soon Dennis – Cool new feature coming to Teams – Reading Progress https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/education-blog/reading-progress-in-microsoft-teams-improve-student-reading/ba-p/2315377 Daniel – teleprompter – https://apps.apple.com/app/id1444106389 Fun Fact First Television Broadcast “The first American TV station began broadcasting on July 2, 1928. W3XK was the first commercially licensed television station in the US, owned by inventor Charles Francis Jenkins. The company broadcast just outside Washington, D.C., and continued to air “radio movies” to the general public five nights a week until 1932.” Notes & Links Thought Experiment – What if all your technology failed? No Internet, devices bricked, no power. What would happen to learning? Could it happen? What are the consequences? 1980’s PBS Series, “Connections” featured James Burke. In Episode 1 – The Trigger Effect, he talked about the New York Blackout and looked at what could happen if all our technology systematically failed us and we were put back to the age of the plow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XetplHcM7aQ In the show he talks about all the technology we use, trust, depend on, every moment of every day with absolutely no idea how it actually works. And poses the question: How did we get here? Let’s look at the technology we depend on for Education – in fact, let’s drill down to the definition of “education” itself. What have we built? How easily could it be completely unravelled?

Tech Talk Roundtable 08-11 | If Second Graders Can Make Video, So Can You!
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description During distance learning we all learned the importance of video for meaningful teaching and learning. A good video can teach and even inspire. A bad video . . . well we’ve all seen our share of those too. Today on the podcast we welcome special guest Dan Speed, who is not only doing great things with video in his classroom, but his students are, as well. Lessons Learned Chris – The pleasures of kahoot A reminder to use reminders Sometimes an empty box can contain hours of enjoyment and learning (shout out: Dave Burgess) Dennis – Barcode to Sheet/goqr.me (pure text to QR Code) Daniel – Attention Residue – you continue to think and process a previous task once you’ve moved onto another. Fun Fact Cisco had already estimated that, by next year, a staggering 82% of all created content will be video. But the pandemic has accelerated an already ravenous appetite for video content. The average U.S. consumer now pays for four different streaming video subscriptions. Nearly one-quarter of U.S. consumers (23%) have added at least one new paid streaming video service since the pandemic began. https://www.forbes.com/sites/falonfatemi/2021/02/01/how-the-pandemic-has-changed-video-content-and-consumption/?sh=6a2f94d6ec00 Notes & Links Video is more than just sharing information, it can connect on an emotional level as well. In school that’s important for moving that info into long term memory (retention). SPECIAL GUEST: Dan Speed (2nd Grade Teacher here at Concordia)

Tech Talk Roundtable 08-10 | Is Email Making Us Dumber?
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description Did you get my email? Oh! That was in the email that Bob sent last week? Can you send me an email about that? Email, Email, Email What would we do without email? But is email making us dumber, less efficient and poorer collaborators? In today’s podcast, we will delve down the email rabbit hole and discuss what we have learned from this 30-year experiment. We’ll discuss its implications on our society, workplace, and on education. Lessons Learned Chris – “Hey Siri, remind me at 11AM to head to the recording room for our podcast” “Hey Siri” reminders kind of makes it seem like I actually have a memory, right Siri? Dennis – Microsoft Lens Daniel – Loom Screenrecorder app – www.Loom.com Fun Fact First Email Sent in 1971 on the ARPANET by Ray Tomlinson – Regarded as “The Inventor of Email” https://www.theverge.com/2012/5/2/2991486/ray-tomlinson-email-inventor-interview-i-see-email-being-used “at the time there was no really good way to leave messages for people. The telephone worked up to a point, but someone had to be there to receive the call. And if it wasn’t the person you wanted to get, it was an istrative assistant or an answering service or something of that sort. That was the mechanism you had to go through to leave a message, so everyone latched onto the idea that you could leave messages on the computer.” Notes & Links A World Without Email – By Cal Newport (Author of Deep Work, Digital Minimalism) (Here is a summary of the book – https://www.getstoryshots.com/books/a-world-without-email-summary/) Almost 30 years of widespread use of this communication tool. Part 1 – The Case Against Email The speed of emails also prevents workers from disconnecting. People’s stress levels are higher as a result of more emails. Newport argues our evolutionary drive to be social leads to a feeling of unease when we neglect these interactions. When no structure is introduced, there will be a huge amount of messages across several tasks that you have to address. To keep on top of this, you have to be constantly monitoring these channels. The issue with this is your lack of focus is reducing your cognitive capacity and you are left miserable. Hyperactive Hive Mind – This social need to be responding to emails in a timely fashion and the inefficiencies it creates. Unstructured conversations on messaging apps and meetings dropped into diaries on the fly congest our day. His objective, to give people the space to do their best work without distraction Part 2 – Principles For Moving Past Email We need a linear approach to work We all need to buy into this approach. No Rogue Leaders Your first two hours of work are your best and should be sacred Deep Work time. People need to completely stop one task in order to fully transition their thought processes to the next one. In the book Scrum (a methodology used for building small teams to tackle projects) Small teams work best with projects (no more than 7) They all work on one task at a time and everyone knows what everyone else is doing based on a Kanban board of tasks. They ask each other: What did you work on yesterday? What are you working on today? What challenges do you have? The job of an is to ensure there is a proper workflow for their team to be successful You can track the amount of tasks completed in a week and the complexity of each task to ensure that teams are improving in their work. This is a measure of past performance Tracking people’s happiness is a measure of future success.

Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description\nHey, if you’ve been with us since the beginning that means you have been listening to us drone on and on for eight whole years. We finally honor your stubbornness by addressing some fascinating applications of … drones.\r\n\nThis week, NASA scientists flew the first drone on Mars. This amazing technology has changed the way we look at flight, gives us a different point of view on the world (and other worlds) around us, and will likely be the way we receive future Amazon deliveries – beside all that they are really cool!\r\n\nToday on the podcast we will welcome two of our own drone experts to tell us everything we need to know about drones. They have experience flying drones, filming with drones, and they also teach a drone CCA here at Concordia. Oh did I mention they are also middle school students?\r\n\n \r\n\nLessons Learned\nChris – Porting information from one phone to another has gotten much easier, but there are still some kinks.\r\n\nDennis – Need an alternative for Google Classroom? Teachers and Students can use Microsoft Teams for Free! https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/teams\r\n\nDaniel – Recording PE class for analysis of their spacing during invasion games. Tech Talk Roundtable 08-08 | Technology vs. Biology
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Podcast Video: https://youtu.be/aVnCyeZhZBw Description We get up in the morning, check our weather app, check our Facebook, check Instagram, check the top news feeds pushed to us on our mobile device, and scroll through the dozens of notifications we received over night. The volume of information that our technology pushes to us is greater than ever before, yet our biology has limitations on what we are designed to pay attention to, or even process. Apps and social media are fighting for our attention, yet we have maxed out or sured what we are biologically capable of focusing on… Wait, I lost my train of thought. What am I talking about again? Oh, right, data overload. Today we continue our discussion on distraction as we talk about the battle between the biology of attention and the demands of technology. Lessons Learned Chris – 5 Tips for Zoom Breakout Rooms – https://bit.ly/2P9gb1b Understand the basics Personalize the rooms Highlight kindness and courtesy Assign roles Allow opportunities (and address ) Dennis – Wonder.me (What Zoom breakout rooms SHOULD be like.) Daniel – Be careful with sharing Zoom windows. VTC Fun Fact If “Back to the Future” was made today and Marty McFly traveled back in time 30 years like he did in the original, the song he would likely be playing at the dance would likely be “Smells Like Teen Spirit” because it would be 1991. (Yes, 1991 was 30 years ago.) In 1991 There was no www.anything.com We were renting VHS tapes from BlockBuster – searching through the empty cases on the shelf to see if they had any of the new release that you wanted to rent? Playing Legend of Zelda on Nintendo (NES) Notes & Links Link: https://www.hottopics.ht/21102/the-quest-for-educational-categorization/ Key Points from Article “multi-tasking also creates a dopamine loop, effectively rewarding the brain for losing focus. In short, we can become addicted to multi-tasking and the false sense of accomplishment that it brings.” “We become better students through the quality of the information that we internalize, and not through its volume.” The conscious mind is capable of processing c.120 bits per second. A conversation requires c.60 bits per second. To listen deeply requires more. In other words, our brains are not designed to multi-task. “Attention is a limited capacity resource. And our brains have evolved to focus on a single thing at any given time.” Solution: Organize and Categorize, two things we are very good at doing. Give yourself specific times to do specific tasks, and don’t cheat yourself!

Tech Talk Roundtable 08-07 | The “Covid Effect”
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description It’s happened to all of us. You’ve got a project you’re working on that needs to be done. A message from your friend pops up with a funny new Bernie Sanders meme, which inspires you with an idea for another meme. You start searching for memes. Your search results include a new music video parody with Bernie in it. You click the link to watch the video. Another suggested video shows up with a preview for that new movie you’ve been waiting to see . . . yada yada yada . . . It’s 11pm and your project still isn’t done. Okay, maybe that’s just me, but we all have issues with distraction. And with the amount of time we spend on screens during remote learning and home quarantines those distractions have become an increasing problem – especially for our kids. us today as we try to focus on distraction as we discuss “The Covid Effect”. Lessons Learned Dennis – Online learning requires low tech tools. Have “Justin Case Bags” ready to go at a moment’s notice. Chris – I’d have a lesson learned, but I got so distracted with pop-up alerts on my screen that I never got my “lesson learned” done. Has that ever happened to you? Daniel – Manage your iMovie hard Disk space. Terminology: Library & Projects. Have your teachers or students create new libraries each semester. Fun Fact 22 Palindrome Dates in 2021 From the Farmers Almanac (https://www.farmersalmanac.com/what-palindrome-28106) According to the Farmers’ Almanac, 2021 will have a total of 22 palindrome dates, which are dates that read the same forwards and backward in four, five, and six-digit formats. From January 20 – 29 we had 10 straight days of 5 digit palindromes. In December we’ll have another 9 straight days. Tech Talk Roundtable 08-05 | Imagineering the School Experience
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description “To all that come to this happy place, welcome. (This school) is your land. Here you relive the fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. (Our School) is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created (this reality)… with hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” That’s a paraphrase of Walt Disney’s welcome message at the opening of Disneyland in 1955. Do you think it could be a motto for your school? Do you think it should be? Today on the podcast we’ll think about how imagineers used technology to drive the theme park experience and wonder how we might apply some of those design principles to the ways we integrate technology at our schools. After all, shouldn’t schools be among the happiest places on earth? Lessons Learned Dennis – iPhone screen shot – capture a full page in Safari. Chris – Wondering how to tell facts from fiction, simple truth from spin, online? The wonderful team from SHEG (Stanford History Education Group) just released a four-minute video showing us how to search laterally, a powerful corrective to online manipulation. Check it out, and explore the many other videos in SHEG’s Civic Online Reasoning series! <https://cor.stanford.edu/videos/lateral-reading-video> Daniel – Plex Media Server – Your own personal Netflix/Prime Video server. Tech Talk Roundtable 08-04 | Zoom Burnout is Real
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description Can you hear me now? I think you froze. I can’t hear you. Unmute yourself. Whose dog is barking? Please mute yourself. Hey, do you realize we can see what you’re doing?!? Does this sound familiar? If it doesn’t then you’ve probably been living under a rock for most of the year. The rest of us understand the feeling all too well. Today on the podcast we’ll offer some tips, advice, and maybe a story or two as we brainstorm ways to avoid both Zoom Burnout, and the very real problem of prolonged covid stress. Lessons Learned Today’s Lessons Learned is Dedicated to Dennis’s father, Richard Grice (1937-2020) Using tech to create memorable learning experiences is nothing new. Good teachers have always used the tools they have available to go beyond the textbook. Notes & Links BOOK: Burnout – Secrets to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski, and Amelia Nagoski Topic Statement: Dealing with your stress is a separate process from dealing with the things that cause your stress. To deal with your stress you must complete the stress cycle Example: On top of our demanding jobs and stress from needing to educate and perform the same teacher duties (planning, curriculum, assessment, meetings, dealing with parents or difficult students) we now have a situation where we are at home with our family on lockdown, doing double duty (work & ing our kids learning) and using technology (Zoom) to educate. Human Giver Syndrome – You put other people’s needs before yours. Teachers are the worst! Almost 30% of the teachers in the US are burnt out. Stressors are what activate the stress response in your body. Stress is the neurological and physiological shift that happens in your body when you encounter one of these threats. Point: Removing these stressors will not relieve the stress on it’s own; you must have ways to deal with the stress to complete the cycle. You must tell your body that you are ok; you must physically do something that says “the stress is gone, you have survived!” Flight/Fight/Freeze Response Fight – Words/Feelings: Anger (You perceive that you can fight and overcome the threat) Flight – Words/Feelings: Run, Avoid (You perceive that you will not be able to overcome and the best thing is run away) Freeze – Words/Feelings: Shut down. Numb. Immobilized. Disconnected. Petrified. (Overwhelming that neither Fight or Flight is the best option) The very word sympathetic means “with emotion,” while parasympathetic—the system that controls freeze—means “beyond emotion.” You may feel disengaged from the world, sluggish, like you don’t care or nothing matters. You feel…outside. Signs you need to deal with the stress: You notice yourself repeating the same action over and over. Overwhelming burst of pain that you can no longer contain it; that you lash out. (Our families take the brunt) You hide or avoid your stressor until you think it’s ok to come out. (Call in sick to avoid or wait till the last moment to address something) Body out of whack – Feel sick all the time, chronic pain. (My back tightens) “The strategies that deal with stressors have almost no relationship to the strategies that deal with the physiological reactions our bodies have to the stressors.”pg. 34 Wellness is not a state of being, but a state of action – move fluidly through the cycles of being human. Ways to deal with your stress: Affection—a six-second kiss, a twenty-second hug,, helpless laughter—are social strategies that complete the cycle, Creative self-expression— writing, drawing, singing, whatever gives you a safe place to move through the emotional cycle of stress. The Monitor Tracks your ‘effort to progress ratio’ and has a strong opinion about what the ratio should be. Little effort = lots of progress – Happy Monitor Significant effort = little progress – Ragey Monitor Significant effort/commitment = No Progress – Helplessness and Resignation Ways to deal with stressors: Planful Reappraisal – Go to plan B, C, D, etc Positive Reappraisal – Remind yourself that what you are doing is “worth it!” Redefine Winning – Move the goal posts or change the monitor’s expectations. Change mindset expectations – Zoom is difficult way of teaching (mindset). You can’t rely on the same ‘teacher feel’ of guaging the room or ability to walk around to get student . Redefine winning – Goal is to make someone smile or ask a good question on Zoom. Do an exit survey to track some specific behavior Redefine failing – Dirk Gently: “I rarely end up where I was intending to go, but often I end up somewhere that I need to be.” (Zoom – that failed so bad that I learned this about my lesson) When attainable switches to unattainable: Benefits of Continuing Benefits of Stopping Costs of Continuing Costs of Stopping Short-term Long-term Ending Notes: Don’t ‘Search For’ Meaning…..You ‘Make’ Meaning Ambition – pursuit of achievement Service to the divine – ‘Glorifying God’ Loving others with authenticity and kindness

Tech Talk Roundtable 08-02 | Building Connections – ACAMIS Live
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
NEW – Watch the Video Podcast: https://youtu.be/wpo5lfpJl-c See our presentation just like attendees at the ACAMIS Conference. Description Welcome to the 4th Annual LIVE podcast from the ACAMIS Tech Conference, hosted by Shen Wai International School, Shenzhen. It also happens to be season 8, episode 2, of the Concordia EdTech Roundtable. We hope you are live, too, and that your camera hasn’t frozen just as you have that awkward look on your face. Hey, now that many of us are returning to school after months of teaching online in our pajamas, I’ve gotta ask … Did your clothes shrink too? I know mine did. Stupid clothes … Why can’t we teach in elastic-waistbands, anyway?!? I may grow fond of the days when my students could only see me from the chin up. You’d think I’d be doing better with all of the exercise I’ve been getting. I’ve been building non-stop since the “illness-that-shall-not-be-named” hit … building lessons plans, building an online presence, building patience, resilience, empathy, humility. Why, I’m positively proud of my humility … but in all that whirlwind of activity we cannot overlook the most important thing: Building connections. Hey, life IS about relationships. Everything else is window dressing. Now that so much of what was is gone and what will be is unknown, we’ve got to focus on the main thing, building connections. Lessons Learned Dennis – When using your Mac laptop do you ever ask yourself, “Why did it do that!?” You can stop some of that annoying trackpad behavior by going to the trackpad on your system preferences. Highlighting a word, the dictionary definition keeps popping up? Disable “Lookup Data Detectors” Swiping/scrolling accidentally moves you back a web page? Go to “More Gestures” and disable “Swipe between pages”. You might be surprised at all the different things you didn’t know you could accidentally do. Chris – Sometimes, ringing a bell gets past the students’ hesitation to raise their hands. When I found out that some kids in my AP US History class were starting to raise their hands only to pull them down before I saw them, I had an idea that only Anita Ward could help me with. “Ring My Bell” echoed in the classroom as the kids came in, and I instructed them to a ringing bell app while I mercilessly rang my app’s bell, just to be annoying. That open insistence on stopping me whenever they had a question broke the ice. That lesson really came alive as kids asked for clarification, wanted to deep dive on an issue or three, and generally lost the inhibition of raising their hands. Thank you, my wonderful daughter, for giving me the insight I needed to meet my students’ needs. Daniel – The badge notifications showing unread are decreasing your ability to prioritize. Turn them off and use the new iOS 14 widgets feature to create shortcuts to the apps that you need without getting distracted by the notification badges. https://discoposse.com/2018/09/09/why-badges-and-notifications-are-killing-your-productivity/ https://www.howtogeek.com/691703/how-to-show-or-hide-notification-badges-in-the-app-library-on-iphone/ https://techcrunch.com/2020/09/21/how-to-make-the-most-of-ios-14-widgets-and-iphone-home-screen-customization/ Fun Fact Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Degrees_of_Kevin_Bacon We know learning is about relationships, but before we get into that we think we need to address the most important relationship of all – how are you related to Kevin Bacon. How to calculate your Bacon number. https://oracleofbacon.org/ Notes & Links Learning is all about relationships – How can we build & nurture connections given the new restrictions of a post-Covid world? Zoom Burnout is real – How do you deal with it? Zoom is one communication tool; know it’s roll! Use the appropriate tool. Building Connections – Teacher-Teacher Avoid Toxic positivity Encourage open/honest conversation Avoid social media rabbit holes Attitude Matters – You cannot be both grateful and resentful. Virtual Connections – Interaction! Virtual Coffees/Happy Hours. Regular check-ins. How are you doin? Watch a movie together! Building Connections – Teacher-Student Don’t waste zoom time on the content which can be presented via other tools. Lectures can be flipped – not live Use that “Face to Face” time for regular Zoom Check-ins. Intentional moments to be a community. Instant Assignments – EXAMPLE: 5 point assignment that requires you to go outside and video yourself doing something. Don’t be afraid to be goofy – Don’t be afraid to sacrifice your dignity for the sake of learning. Kids want/need to see the real you! Let your personality shine through. (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/education/2020/07/16/back-to-school-reopening-online-parents-guide/5416528002/ ) Sound Bite from Brandon Wislocki – Grade 5 teacher in Irvine, CA. (His Bacon Number is 3.) TAKEAWAY POINT: Kids don’t care what you know until they know you care. (Maslow Before Bloom)

Tech Talk Roundtable 08-01 | Back in the Saddle Again
Episodio en Concordia Ed Tech Podcast » Podcast
Description Well it’s been a quiet week here in Lake “Covid-Be-Gone” where the coffee is strong, the parents are good-looking, and all of the children are above average – wait a minute! Quiet is NOT the word for it! If jumping back in the saddle to start school in Fall of 2020 feels more like one of those upside down spinning rides at a sketchy roadside carnival, or maybe “Traction Park,” New Jersey, then you’re not alone. Let’s rock and/or Roll together as we hang on for another exciting academic ride as we spin out this new season! Lessons Learned Dennis – Zoom Breakout Room ability – in a Google Slide show or online Power Point, create and assign a slide for each breakout room. After placing students in breakout rooms, switch to slide sorter view so you can watch the slides live. If you see nothing happening on one slide, you can jump in that breakout room and check on those students who might be off task. Chris – There is no tech failure so large that I cannot teach through it. Zoom connection breaks? WeChat! Team teacher freezes? Jump in! Internet fails? Discuss what you were showing. Model adaptability. Daniel – The Social Dilemma – the algorithms have been created to keep your attention…to go down the rabbit hole of watching video after video; post after post so that rs get their message in front of you. Fun Fact Will I live long enough to see the last Star Wars Movie? Star Wars began in 1977 with its first movie Episode 4, a New Hope. Final trilogy began in 2015 with “The Force Awakens”. To put that in perspective, the Wizard of Oz premiered in 1939, 38 years before the first Star Wars Movie. The Force Awakens premiered in 2015, 38 years after the original Star Wars. When you consider the number of side stories in production, and shows like the Mandalorian which begins its second season next month, we have been enjoying the Star Wars Universe for over 43 years and it doesn’t look like that will end anytime soon. Will I live long enough to see the last Star Wars movie from “a long time ago?” Probably not. FYI – Star Trek has been going since 1966. That’s 54 years. Notes & Links How has this pandemic made our teachers and our schools better? What old practices have we been forced to let go of and how will this make us better? Tech Training has moved up in priority as it is a required skill. The excuse of “I’m not good at technology” is no longer acceptable. Teachers use their time in front of the students more effectively. Distilling lessons to the most important. Standardizing classes in your LMS. Students and parents need to spend less mental energy finding what they need to do than actually doing it. Standardizing tools – teachers need to agree on a common set of tools, and can’t be lone rangers. (Think back to our “Shadow IT” podcast) Standardized Testing vs. Authentic assessment If we trust, they may fail, but if we fail to trust, we fail ourselves … the game is already over. [Going for a chiasmus here but not quite getting it.]

Description You’re awesome! You’ve done it! Today is your day! You’ve made it this far. You’re well on your way. You’ve Zoomed, and you’ve SeeSaw’d, and posted online. You’ve checked on your students to make sure they’re fine. You’ve stretched beyond limits and still haven’t snapped. You’ve taught in sweat pants and you’ve afternoon napped. Now the year that won’t end seems close to it’s close. What will next year be like? Nobody knows. But let us not wonder – at least not today. Let’s set work aside and make time to play, A game made to challenge both Daniel and me. A game Dennis calls “EdTech Ask Me – Part 3” Lessons Learned Dennis – Pilot the Dragon Crew capsule to dock with the ISS. https://iss-sim.spacex.com/ Chris – I do not have to agree in order to understand another point of view Daniel – Artsonia.com – a great way to share student digital portfolios and they have a gift store that allows you to put your child’s artwork on canvas, mugs, keychains, etc. Fun Fact Beam Me Up Scotty! Today’s fun fact: In honor of this week’s successful launch of the spaceX Falcon 9, we go back to 2017 where the cremated remains of actor James Doohan, who played Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the original Star Trek series, are among those of 300 space enthusiasts lofted into the stratosphere aboard Falcon 9 when the rocket lifted off. A Texas-based company called Celestis arranged for the out-of-this-world memorial. The company can also arrange to have grandma’s remains shot to the moon, and charges around $3,000. Description On our last episode, we provided a plethora of pithy platitudes praising the technological proficiency we’ve procured through these problematic protective policies. Today we continue that conversation by deep diving to deliver some more specific examples of how we might do things differently as we return to our post lockdown classroom, where it will NOT be business as usual. Lessons Learned Dennis – iPad Smart connector. The iPad as a laptop replacement device might have finally arrived. Chris – You can use multiple devices on the same to teach through Zoom. You can use one as a whiteboard (iPad), another device as a video-microphone for students to share and respond (cell phone), and a third device to serve as your still camera (laptop). Daniel – Downdetector.com – lets you know if major internet services are down. Helps you to diagnose if it is your internet Fun Fact Today’s fun fact is all about something we are truly thankful for, from the heart of our bottoms – Toilet Paper. http://www.toiletpaperhistory.net/toilet-paper-facts/toilet-paper-fun-facts/ Notes & Links What are some specific practices and technology that we’ve learned to use through this experience that can transform our teaching and learning? Leverage technology for flexible scheduling Lessons that focus more on Goals or Essential Questions, rather than Daily Work Flipped Classroom has a more prominent role in instruction (Daniel – VIDEO) More online collaborative projects More extensive use of Digital Portfolios + authentic assessment, – “objective” assessment Less, and more meaningful, assessment Rubrics, rubrics, rubrics Lessons Learned from Online Learning A need for unified systems. No more Lone Ranger teachers using different systems. (Daniel) Leverage Zoom to bring experts into the classroom. Description Imagine emerging from six months of complete isolation asking, “So, anything new?” Would you believe what people told you? From the ongoing horrors of the headlines to pithy memes like, “Imagine if you will a dystopic future in which Cinco de Mayo falls on Taco Tuesday, only to be ruined by a virus named after a Mexican beer.” All true, all deeply unsettling, and all the more reason to plan for a future in which our “normal” has become the “old normal” and we move into a speculative “new normal.” Today, the Concordia Ed Tech Roundtable team lifts its gaze past the present problems to plan for a post-pandemic planet. As Abraham Lincoln once told us, “The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present.” So, what lessons will we learn as we move forward, into the 2020-21 school year and beyond? Lessons Learned Dennis – Zoom Security/Canvas Integration Chris – Breakout rooms in Zoom Daniel – For me, a new Apple keyboard feature on iPad devices. No longer need the shift key to get to other symbols and numbers. Just press and drag down on the keyboard to bring forward the symbol or number. Notes & Links Online Learning though Covid 19 – What have we learned? Do we need such a structured day at school? Is the 10 point quiz dead? Knowledgeable consumers of information?
