The year 2019 marks the 500th Anniversary of the First Circumnavigation of the Earth by the Armada de Molucca, the fleet led by a talented Portuguese sailor, in an expedition to reach the Spice Islands sailing from Europe. Fernão de Magalhães (worldwide known as Magellan) was in charge. The Spanish Crown, formed by the Kingdom of Castile and Aragon, financed the trip. However the Spaniards on board never trusted their Portuguese captain. The origin of the sailors looked like the European Parliament, they were from all around Europe (there were no women, though). Magellan had to deal with inaccurate maps, extreme weather conditions, hostile natives, lack of food, illnesses on board, that led to many mutinies. The expedition lasted till 1522 and was completed by the Basque captain Juan Sebastian Elcano. The journey’s relevance is still visible in many places, being the Strait of Magellan the most famous one. In those days spices were as valuable as gold. Spices, particularly cloves from the Spice Islands. Located in nowadays Indonesia, the Maluku Islands were the key point of the whole trip to happen. They set sail heading to the West to find a new path to avoid crossing the East, controlled by the Ottoman Empire. Two hundred and sixty-five determined men departed, but only eighteen were able to come back. We will follow the wake of the carrack Victoria and its adventures, but not only. This acoustic trip aims to describe how the world functioned and how this key moment for Europe, the so called “the conquest of the world” or as some call it now “reencounter”, shaped the way we perceive humanity. How indigenous epistemology was almost erased, or how suddenly eating habits changed forever. Analyzing it, with its strengths and flaws, the narration will be spiced with a strong decolonial perspective, giving voice to all the people involved in their own languages. With the help of the official journal written by the Venetian scholar Antonio Pigafetta, and also with excerpts of Stefan Zweig’s book “Magellan”, we will formulate a completely different approach to, as the Austrian once said, “maybe the most magnificent odyssey in the history of mankind” but also one of the most important moments in the birth of ethnocentrism. “Browsing around the clove”, a radio show produced by David Córdoba Bou for Radiofabrik. 5n2q4i

Browsing around the clove: Episode X “Saccharin”
With the feat already completed, in this last episode called saccharin, we talk about the geopolitics of the trip, and how the world was changed (for better or for worse), until our days: How the world was governed from that moment on by a Eurocentric vision. How the diversity of the world’s epistemology was excluded, hidden or eliminated. How the first circumnavigation was used and continues to be a political weapon. How atrocities committed against First Nations were denounced at the time by friars like Bartolomé de las Casas, and in our times by thinkers like Ramón Grosfoguel or Edward Said. How indigenous movements and their ideologies, are becoming a bulwark against a systematic process of the destruction of our planet. How the journey changed forever, as Stefan Zweig states in the introduction of his book “Magellan”: Erinnere dich, du Ungeduldiger, erinnere dich, du Ungenügsamer, wie dies vordem war! Browsing around the clove: Episode IX “Cinnamon”
After a failed incursion in Cape Verde to try to get some food, and after a thousand fatigues and after countless problems and deaths, they finally make it, they complete the first circumnavigation of the world. Elcano and the survivors are received by the Emperor himself. The people of San Lucar have never seen so skinny persons before in their lives. Maximilianus Transylvanus interviewed all the survivors. From those experiences he wrote the book “De Moluccis insulis”. Browsing around the clove a show produced by David Córdoba Bou

Browsing around the clove: Episode VIII “Saffron”
Saffron is made up of threads, filaments that separate, as do the Victoria and the Trinidad in the Spice Islands. While the Trinidad, piloted by Gonzalo Gómez de Espinosa will try to return to the American continent in order to reach Europe again, the Victoria commanded by Juan Sebastián Elcano will continue heading to the west, towards territories that were under Portuguese control, with the intention to browse around the world but avoiding with the rival empire. The path will not be easy. A stowaway called “Hunger” will come back on board as Stefan Zweig indicates: Keinen fremden Laut hören sie, kein fremdes Gesicht schauen sie in all diesen Wochen und Wochen. Browsing around the clove a show produced by David Córdoba Bou

Browsing around the clove: Episode VII “Clove”
Seven is the number. Finally, Clove is here. The most precious spice that pushed this trip to be accomplished will not be easy to get. Magellan, immersed in an excess of confidence, will face the local chief Lapu-Lapu, in a battle where he pays with his life. With the death of the captain, the Armada de Molucca sails through many islands located all around the Indonesian seas, Brunei among them. At last, they reach Tidore, in the Moluccas, also known as the Spice Islands. Browsing around the clove a show produced by David Córdoba Bou

Browsing around the clove: Episode VI “Star Anise”
Known by its unmistakable aroma and its unique shape, the sixth episode of “Browsing around the clove” is baptized as star anise. The Armada de Molucca will arrive to The Philippines, (A.K.A Maharlika) They will be greeted by the Rajah Humabon. Magellan will seal an alliance with the local leader as Stefan Zweig described: Großartiger ist selten eine Tat vollendet worden. This blood compact had two principles. The Islanders will be converted to Catholicism and subjugated into the Hispanic Monarchy. Magellan, on the other hand, will have to convince the local leaders to tribute the king. Lapu-Lapu, the chief of the small island of Mactan will refuse to do so. Browsing around the clove a show produced by David Córdoba Bou.

Browsing around the clove: Episode V “Nutmeg”
Nutmeg is the name of the fifth episode of “Browsing around the clove”. This ground spice has, like all the other spices, many benefits, but if consumed in excessive amounts, the nutmeg powder may produce allergic reactions, dermatitis, or psychoactive effects. It is therefore important to be aware of its use. Something like what will happen to Magellan and his fleet during this episode. First, for having incorrectly calculated distances, hunger and consequently scurvy, will take over the crew. And then, once they reach the mainland, on the peaceful island of Guam. Browsing around the clove: Episode IV “Ginger”
Ginger is the name of the fourth episode of “Browsing around the clove”. Navigating through Patagonia, the crew will face some friendly “giants”. Later on, half of the crew organizes a mutiny against Magellan but he will come through unscathed. Once Juan de Cartagena was marooned, they will reach the Pacific ocean sailing around “the Strait of All Saints and the eleven thousand virgins“, but won’t hit Rapa Nui. Browsing around the clove: Episode III “Cardamom”
In this third episode called “Cardamom”, Magellan’s crew will reach the American Continent, also known as Abya Yala. Also, we will witness the fall of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec empire by Hernan Cortés, that almost happened at the same time. Browsing around the clove: Episode II “Mustard”
In this second episode called “Mustard”, we will expose how distances worked in previous explorations. Columbus always thought he was in India or some Japanese Island. We will list to see who belonged to the Armada de Molucca. Also, we will count what was carried in the five carracks (Trinidad under Magellan’s command, San Antonio commanded by Juan de Cartagena, Concepción commanded by Gaspar de Quesada, Santiago commanded by Juan Rodriguez Serrano and Victoria commanded by Luis Mendoza) before they set sail. Magellan – Stefan Zweig. Browsing around the clove: Episode I “Vanilla”
“Im Anfang war das Gewürz”, In the beginning was the spice, that’s how the author Stefan Zweig starts his book called Magellan. Spices, these tiny ingredients revolutionized the way we eat, and they are present in many of our favorite dishes. But not only spices. Italian tomatoes, Valencia oranges, Swiss Chocolate and potatoes for everyone… All these products have something in common. Yes, you can find them at your nearest supermarket but none of them are native to those lands. Columbus didn’t discover the New World, but indeed in that moment, in of biology, the world changed. And at that moment, many things were happening. This journey wants to find out how spices shaped and modified the course of history for ever. And with this first episode called “Vanilla” we will see how it worked. Browsing around the clove a show produced by David Córdoba Bou.
