AEM Podcast: An AEM Interview with Cedric Huesler, Part 3
AEM Podcast: An AEM Interview with Cedric Huesler, Part 3
At Adobe Summit 2017, I tried to get an interview with Cedric Huesler to talk about some AEM things. He was far too busy. Several months later he made time to record a podcast with us. Here is part 3 of our Ask Me Anything interview with Cedric Huesler, Director Product Management for Digital Experience Management at Adobe. In this podcast, we discuss the following thoughts with Cedric: Are you open to submissions from the community to help improve the AEM documentation? How do you decide what gets shared out to the Apache project? How have you seen AEM used by customers in ways you did not anticipate? What is the plan for AEM in the next five years? Our thanks to Cedric for taking the time to do this interview. Here is Part 1 & Part 2 in case you missed them. What did you think of this podcast series? To get more like this and further insights into AEM, subscribe today.

AEM Podcast: An AEM interview with Cedric Huesler, Part 1
AEM Podcast: An AEM interview with Cedric Huesler, Part 1
At Adobe Summit 2017, I attended the “Adobe Experience Manager Sites: Top 10 Innovations” session which was co-hosted by Cedric Huesler, Director Product Management for Digital Experience Management at Adobe. I always attend this particular session because here we get sort of our first look at what the latest version of AEM is going to be. After the presentation, I decided this was the year that I would try to pin Cedric down for an interview. I knew it was a long shot. After introducing myself and requesting some time, Cedric very graciously said he would try to stop by the booth but he had a lot of duties and might not have free time. I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t disappointed. I knew that meant I wasn’t getting my interview. Imagine my surprise this summer when I got an email from Cedric saying that he would be open to doing an interview with us. And even more exciting was the format that he suggested: Ask Me Anything. Myself, Joey, and Ken Woodward (one of our Directors of Software Engineering) got to work outlining a list of questions. Because the length of the recording was so long, we have decided to break it up into three sections. Here are the topics that we discussed in this podcast: Cedric Huesler background Improving Replication The Rich Text Editor Our many thanks to Cedric for taking the time to do this interview.

AEM Podcast: Shared Component Properties with Brett Birschbach
AEM Podcast: Shared Component Properties with Brett Birschbach
Joey and I were presenting at an Adobe Experience Manager Meetup group in Chicago when we first had the chance to meet Brett Birschbach, Solutions Architect at HS2 Solutions. During that meetup, we talked about how much we liked ACS AEM Commons—Brett furthered our interest in the topic by explaining that they just had something merged in at the end of 2016. It was called Shared Component Properties. We talked it over, and he agreed to record with us. Fast forward several months and our schedules finally were able to align. Our thanks to Brett for taking the time to discuss their Shared Component Properties feature from ACS AEM Commons. Additionally, Brett talked through the process of submitting to ACS AEM Commons. Here are a couple of helpful links mentioned in the audio: MultiSite Manager Tips and Tricks Immerse presentation HS2 write-up about the Shared Component properties

AEM Podcast: Adobe Summit Interview with Justin Edelson about ACS AEM Commons
AEM Podcast: Adobe Summit Interview with Justin Edelson about ACS AEM Commons
One of our last interviews at Adobe Summit 2017 was with our friend Justin Edelson (current Team Lead, Engineering Response Team at Adobe). He took some time to discuss a couple of topics with Joey and I. This is part 2 of that conversation (part 1 here). This week’s podcast will focus on ACS AEM Commons. As we have discussed before, ACS AEM Commons is a great resource for any Adobe Experience Manager implementation. It saves both time and money. Of course you already know that, right? RIGHT?! In this podcast, we talk about where ACS AEM Commons is going next. The big question is how they can broaden the contributor base. They want to have a greater amount of submissions and pull requests coming from the customer and implementation partner development groups working with AEM, instead of specifically from Adobe Consulting Services. If you have ideas, then feel free to reach out to David Gonzales and Justin Edelson to share them.

AEM Podcast: Adobe Summit Interview with Justin Edelson about Core Components
AEM Podcast: Adobe Summit Interview with Justin Edelson about Core Components
One of our last interviews at Adobe Summit 2017 was with our friend Justin Edelson (current Team Lead, Engineering Response Team at Adobe). He took some time to discuss a couple of topics with Joey and I. This is part 1 of that conversation. This week’s podcast will focus on Core Components. This is Adobe’s new method for handling the default set of components that come with Adobe Experience Manager. At Summit Justin also led a lab discussing how to work with the new Core Components. While the lab was not recorded, for obvious reasons, the booklet that was used in it is available for here(Adobe Summit 2017 Core Components lab booklet). us for a discussion with one of the leading Adobe development minds behind Adobe Experience Manager as we talk about AEM’s Core Components and how they went about their methods and reasoning for setting it up the way they have. Part of the discussion was also the demise of the Classic UI, because these Core Components are only for the Touch UI. At the time it was not known what would happen, but as I have written about before in my article “Bye Bye Classic UI”, we have a better idea of its end of life. Take a listen!

AEM Podcast: Adobe Summit Interview with Jason Meyer
AEM Podcast: Adobe Summit Interview with Jason Meyer
We have spoken about Jason Meyer before, President and CEO of Zap Technology Solutions (http://www.zapts.com/). He is the one who organized and manages the AEM Tech Slack channel, that we mentioned you should a while ago. As a reminder to sign up; simply send an email to [email protected] with your name, email address, and title (or job description) and you will be added manually. We were able to meet Jason IRL at Summit this year. He was willing to take a few minutes to talk about his AEM security scanner. This is a tool that looks for Adobe Experience Manager specific security flaws, and not just your typical run of the mill vulnerability. Did we mention that it is completely free? You should use it.

Adobe Summit Interview with Anton Zuponcic about AEM Forms
Adobe Summit Interview with Anton Zuponcic about AEM Forms
If you have ever had to develop with Adobe Experience Manager Forms, then you know that things are not exactly what you would expect to see compared to AEM Sites. I know that some of our developers wanted to pull their hair out while working with it. Part of the reason for the frustration is because AEM Forms was a mashup of some form tools and LiveCycle’s form-based document management system. It wasn’t a perfect marriage at the start, but it appears that things are getting better with the latest release of AEM. We had a chance to sit down with Anton Zuponcic, Specialist Master at Deloitte Digital, at Adobe Summit 2017 to talk about AEM Forms. If you have been working with Forms in the past then this will be helpful to know. Anton has been working with AEM for 6 years, and has been a proficient developer for a total of 15 years. Our thanks to him for his time.

AEM Podcast: Adobe Summit Interview with David Gonzalez about ACS AEM Commons
Continuing our slew of interviews with notable engineers-from Adobe Summit 2017 in Las Vegas, I interviewed David Gonzalez (Technical Marketing Engineer at Adobe and co-project lead of ACS AEM Commons/Tools/Samples), at the end of his lab on Demystifying Search in AEM 6.3 (a topic for a later podcast). We discussed a variety of topics, stretching from how he got involved in the ACS AEM project initially, to some of the future features we might see in ACS AEM Commons. It was especially great to hear David talk about his experiences growing as a developer and the process he went through to mature in his coding practice.

AEM Podcast: A Summit Interview with Dan Klco about AEM DataLayer
AEM Podcast: A Summit Interview with Dan Klco about AEM DataLayer
One of the new things this year at Adobe Summit 2017, was a session entitled “AEM Rockstar, The Top Tips are Here”. While they have done Rockstar sessions before, it has never been done with Adobe Experience Manager. The premise was that developers submit their “digital experience tips, tricks, and project strategies” and then a of Adobe dignitaries choose winners from the top 5 finalists. All the participant finalists were great. In this recorded interview, we are ed by Dan Klco from Perficient who talks about his first place prize showcasing a new open source library, AEM DataLayer. In the recording, he mentions his GitHub repo, where you can go to see his code. Those who have been working in AEM for a long time will probably recognize Dan’s name as he used to be a prolific writer on the 6D Labs blog, he now contributes at blogs.perficient.com/adobe, and has been a part of the AEM development community for quite a while, including serving as the Apache PMC for Sling. Take a listen. Here is a link to watch the AEM Rockstar presentation.

AEM Podcast: Adobe Summit 2017 Scott Macdonald Interview
AEM Podcast: Adobe Summit 2017 Scott Macdonald Interview
Every year we have the opportunity to attend Adobe Summit 2017. We love to go because of the announcements and sessions but also because of the chance to meet up with and chat with so many Adobe Experience Manager experts in the field. And thanks to our trusty recorder, those conversations could be captured to share with the rest of you. We plan to post a number of these recordings as podcasts over the next couple of months, so you have the opportunity to hear what these experts have to share. Subscribe to the podcast to ensure that you don’t miss the interviews. This week is a recording done with Scott Macdonald, AEM community manager, and author of Scott’s Digital Community Blog. In this recording, we talk with Scott about the advancements that Adobe is taking to help improve the community conversation amongst AEM developers. Specifically, he mentioned: the improvements they are planning to make for the Adobe Help Forum for Adobe Experience Manager, the AEM HelpX articles, and the Ask the Expert webinar series they run every month. Our thanks to Scott for his time at Adobe Summit and his efforts to help educate all of us working on AEM implementations. Enjoy!

AEM Podcast: The Versatility of Tags
AEM Podcast: The Versatility of Tags
Tags are one of the simplest portions of Adobe Experience Manager. But they can also be used is so many different ways. In this podcast, Joey and I take the time to discuss the different ways that you can use Tags and the Tag Management system of AEM in your implementation. Specifically, we talk about how they can be used by Developers, Authors, and front-end s of the site. A note of caution, tags can get out of hand really easily, without proper istration and control. Make sure you work with your organization or customer to implement procedures to prevent an overgrown taxonomy. They may think it is limiting, but in reality, you are preventing a mess down the line.

AEM Podcast: Some Basics about AEM & CDN’s
AEM Podcast: Some Basics about AEM & CDN’s
We have worked with customers in the past who were always curious how Adobe Experience Manager and Content Delivery Networks (CDN) would work together. The simple answer is “quite well, but…”. Configuration is always the key. How does it need to be setup to be able to accomplish the appropriate edge locality, without presenting a barrier to content cache? In this podcast, Joey and I talk about what a CDN is, how CDN’s can be used with AEM, and the ways to deal with invalidating the cache. If you have used a CDN with AEM then tell us about your experience and some of the things you had to deal with: [email protected].

AEM Podcast: A Quick Look at AEM for Systems Engineers
AEM Podcast: A Quick Look at AEM for Systems Engineers
Most of what we have posted about Adobe Experience Manager is mainly geared at the developer. Not much has been said about the sys or systems engineer. This year we did post a series by Tyler Garner, one of our senior systems engineers, about what you would need to understand the infrastructure of AEM, along with some steps on how to implement them. In this podcast, we approach AEM from the systems side and talk about how it is different compared to what a developer needs to know and do. We talk specifically about: Software Delivery Model vs. Execution Model Knowing the role of Author, Publish, and Dispatcher Understand /etc/map Joey’s top three things that AEM Systems Engineers need to make sure that they handle: Monitor replication queues Audit, Workflow, and Version purge Offline Garbage Collection And finally, my plea to Adobe Experience Manager systems people: Please don’t just be a Box Monkey. You should care about more than just keeping the server up. You should understand what is going on and care about how and why devs are making the decisions that they are.

AEM Podcast: ACS AEM Samples Explained
AEM Podcast: ACS AEM Samples Explained
We have covered ACS AEM Commons and ACS AEM Tools at length. So we thought it was time for us to discuss ACS AEM Samples, the third leg of the ACS AEM suite. ACS AEM Samples is “Well commented code samples of AEM building blocks to help educate AEM developers”. It can be used as a skeleton or starting point for your implementation but it is not production ready code. “No guarantees exist around the effects of installing this package in AEM” as it hasn’t been vetted for “unobtrusiveness”. Samples is just a good place to start if you want to learn about Adobe Experience Manager, need a refresher, or need a good place to start with your implementation. In this podcast, we discuss a bit about what it is and then some use cases that allowed Joey to use it. Specifically, we talk about how he used OSGI Service, Filter Servlet, and the Query Builder.

A Campaign Conversation with Bruce Swann
A Campaign Conversation with Bruce Swann
In July, I had the opportunity to sit down with Bruce Swann, Senior Product Marketing Manager on the Adobe Campaign team, and talk a little bit about Adobe Campaign. We spent time getting the background on it, how it can be used to get people to engage with an organization, how it can be integrated to work with an Adobe Experience Manager site, and what is on the planned schedule for enhancements. Instead of having Joey along with me, I was ed by Stefan Hofmeister, who is an Adobe Certified Expert as a Business Practitioner for Adobe Campaign. Unfortunately the device we were using to record the podcast cut out and so we lost the last part of the conversation, so the podcast ends rather abruptly. Our thanks to Bruce for taking the time to talk to us.

AEM Podcast: ACS AEM Tools Deep Dive Part 1
AEM Podcast: ACS AEM Tools Deep Dive Part 1
We have talked a lot about ACS AEM Commons on the site. We think that they are a great resource to developers of Adobe Experience Manager. But we have never talked about ACS AEM Tools, so we thought it was high time that we did. In this podcast Joey and I take time to discuss exactly what ACS AEM Tools is and discuss in detail 3 specific tools: Explain Query, Query Editor, and CSV Asset Importer. Really there is no great difference between Commons and Tools. But, as the website for ACS AEM Tools website clearly states, these are not things that you should ever use in your production environments. So please make sure that you don’t!

AEM Podcast: AEM Template Editor Review
AEM Podcast: AEM Template Editor Review
During Adobe Summit 2016, we had a chance to talk with Gabriel Walt, Product Manager of Web Experience Management, about the new functionality of the Template Editor for Adobe Experience Manager 6.2. I was also able to attend the breakout session/lab where he showed how it worked. It was much improved from what I had seen a year earlier. Still, there are some concerns that you should consider when setting this up for your authors, most notably the permissions for who can actually do it. In this podcast we are ed by Adobe Certified Expert in Adobe Experience Manager, Ken Woodward, where we will discuss his thoughts about the template editor in AEM 6.2 as well as play some audio that we recorded with Gabriel Walt at Adobe Summit 2016. Here are some of links that we mentioned in the recording that you might find helpful as you get started using the Template Editor: Adobe Experience Manager 6.2 Template developer docs https://docs.adobe.com/docs/en/aem/6-2/develop/templates.html Adobe Experience Manager 6.2 Editable Templates developer doc https://docs.adobe.com/docs/en/aem/6-2/develop/templates/page-templates-editable.html Adobe Experience Manager 6.2 Creating Templates developer doc https://docs.adobe.com/docs/en/aem/6-2/author/site-page-features/templates.html Known issues of 6.2 https://docs.adobe.com/docs/en/aem/6-2/release-notes/known-issues.html 6.2 Release Notes https://docs.adobe.com/docs/en/aem/6-2/release-notes.html Share your experiences/opinions with the Template Editor for Adobe Experience Manager 6.2 on Twitter @axis41.

AEM Podcast: “Show Us Your Buckmark” – AEM and UGC
AEM Podcast: “Show Us Your Buckmark” – AEM and UGC
The gun enthusiast community is huge, and Browning is a big part of it. As such they were keen to be able to use AEM’s Generated Content (UGC) system for their community. But Adobe is kind of notorious for having great solutions but not documenting how to use them (It’s tough when you have so much functionality in your offerings). One part of Adobe Experience Manager where this is the case is UGC. We sat down with Adobe Certified Expert Hisham Djobo, a developer with Axis41, who worked on Browning’s “Show Us Your Buckmark” section, which utilizes UGC. Hisham had to spend a lot of time figuring out how this poorly documented part of AEM worked to accomplish the customer’s need to continue to foster Browning’s community. In this podcast we discuss: What we mean by Generated Content, reverse replication, the problems we faced, how we solved them, and how they dealt with spam.
