To give someone a piece of your mind = to tell someone what you think when you’re angry about their behavior. > My car has broken down for the third time this month. I’m going to give my mechanic a piece of my mind!

Pet peeve = something that particularly annoys you. What’s your top pet peeve? Loud chewing? Talking during a movie?

To drive away = to force somebody to leave by making a situation unattractive / unpleasant. > The city’s high taxes are driving local investors away.

To call on someone = to ask a person to speak. > I don’t know the answer, so I hope the teacher doesn’t call on me.

EPISODE 146: “I MISS YOU”   Is it just me or…? = A rhetorical question in order to find out if other people agree with your opinion. > Is it just me, or is it freezing in here?

I’ll believe it when I see it” = something you say when you will only believe that something happens or exists if you actually see it. A: John says he’s going to help us clean the house. B: Yeah, right. I’ll believe it when I see it!”

To shop around = to compare prices/look for the lowest price. Don’t buy the first item you see; it’s better to shop around.

143: PEANUTS!
Peanuts = very little money. > I refuse to work for peanuts.

Fair and square = in an honest, clear and fair manner.  > Argentina won the match fair and square, so why is there uproar?

EPISODE 141: "THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS"
Expression: Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. = Don’t question the value of a gift. > A: Thanks for the gift B, but I prefer black socks. B: Hey! Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth!!

To bounce back (phrasal verb): to quickly return to a normal condition after a difficult situation / event. > After losing their last four games, the Chicago Bears bounced back and won their next three. (Wishful thinking!)
