Ep 19: Only I Have the Answers: The Loneliness of Leadership
Ep 19: Only I Have the Answers: The Loneliness of Leadership
Meet the Host & Guest: 👤 Lindsey Schultz, CEO of MRC Recruiting 🎙️ Stephen Dummit, Executive Coach & Founder of Tradewinds Leadership 🎙️ Dr. Haydon Mort, Founder of Geologize   🎧 About This Session: In this episode, Lindsey and Stephen confront a myth that isolates countless leaders: “Only I have the answers.” It’s a lie rooted in pressure, perfectionism, and the fear of appearing weak. The truth? Real leadership thrives on collaboration—not control. Together, they explore how asking for input before offering your own ideas can build trust, inspire innovation, and create a more connected leadership culture. If you’ve ever felt the heavy weight of always needing to be “the expert,” this conversation will offer both relief and a roap forward.   Our Promise:                     We aim to engage with the most creative minds in mining—from engineers and executives to environmentalists and geologists—to explore groundbreaking projects and pioneering innovations. Ep 18: No Mistakes Allowed: Breaking the Perfectionism Trap
Ep 18: No Mistakes Allowed: Breaking the Perfectionism Trap
In the latest installment of Ore-atory: Elevating Mining Minds, host Lindsey Schultz welcomes back Stephen Dummitt of Tradewinds Leadership for part two of their special May mental health series. This episode focuses on Stigma Lie #2: “You’re Not Allowed to Make Mistakes.” The duo dives into how this harmful belief restricts learning, erodes team trust, and undermines both physical and psychological safety in the workplace. Stephen opens with a story from his time as an electrician, recalling the day he accidentally blew up a 480V relay system. Rather than being reprimanded, he was met with a question from his mentor (his father): “Did you learn what you did wrong?” That mindset, he explains, solidified the lesson—and changed how he approached every job moving forward. Mistakes, he argues, are vital to true mastery. Lindsey builds on this by sharing her strategy as a consultant: start new roles by asking, “What don’t I know?” This curiosity-first mindset disarms pressure, accelerates learning, and builds deeper connections with the team. They discuss the difference between giving someone the answer and teaching them how to think—emphasizing the need for teachable moments. They also tackle the psychological side of perfectionism—how fear of asking “dumb” questions or making errors creates mental stress, silences communication, and isolates workers. Stephen introduces practical tools: spotlighting experts to invite mentorship, asking others how they learned, and using phrases like “explain it to me like I’m five” to create an open environment. The conversation also unpacks the vital distinction between endurance and resilience—enduring means suffering in isolation. Resilience, on the other hand, is about bouncing back through , tools, and connectedness. This reframing is critical in mining, construction, and other high-stakes industries where mistakes can be both emotional and physical. With 55% of the mining workforce nearing retirement, Stephen urges younger professionals to start asking questions now—because the window to capture decades of experience is closing. And for leaders, it’s a call to create space for those questions, to model vulnerability, and to offer both literal and implied permission to fail. The episode closes with a discussion on the underutilization of Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)—only 4.9% nationally—and how simply sharing that you’ve sought help can give others permission to do the same. When trust, communication, and courage intersect, teams don’t just perform better—they thrive. Key Takeaways Mistakes are necessary for growth—not signs of weakness. Psychological safety begins with learner safety. Resilience isn’t about suffering—it’s about . Great leaders teach others how to think, not just what to do. Only 4.9% use EAPs—let’s normalize getting help. Our Promise: We aim to engage with the most creative minds in mining—from engineers and executives to environmentalists and geologists—to explore groundbreaking projects and pioneering innovations. Our discussions are designed not only to inform but to inspire action and empower our listeners to lead and innovate. Ep 17: You Have to Earn Your Spot: Challenging the Silence Around Worth
Ep 17: You Have to Earn Your Spot: Challenging the Silence Around Worth
In the first episode of Ore-atory’s Mental Health Month series, host Lindsey Schultz is ed by Stephen Dumbit, founder of Tradewinds Leadership, to dive into one of the most pervasive and damaging beliefs in workplace culture: “You have to earn your spot.” Framed as Stigma Lie #1, this idea implies that belonging, , and even respect must be proven through suffering, overperformance, or silence. And it’s a myth that contributes deeply to isolation, burnout, and mental health avoidance across high-demand industries. Stephen opens with a powerful reframing of stigma—not just as taboo, but as the fear of consequence. This fear is what keeps employees from accessing the mental health they need, whether it's counseling, coaching, or simply connecting with peers. Lindsey relates with her own experiences in coaching, discussing how external resources helped her step into public speaking and leadership roles with more confidence. The episode explores both the negative and positive sides of coping mechanisms, from alcohol abuse to long walks and creative outlets. One memorable moment includes Stephen describing his COVID-era walks, where neighborhoods came alive with front-porch music, outdoor games, and spontaneous connections—illustrating the deeply human need for joy and community. The science behind mental wellness also makes an appearance, as Stephen breaks down the difference between dopamine (anticipation) and oxytocin (connection), and why small gestures like gratitude and check-ins have a big impact. Lindsey shares her “good things are always happening to me” practice, offering listeners a practical way to shift their mindset daily. One of the episode’s most compelling insights is Stephen’s model of team influence: in any group, 70% sit in the middle, waiting to see what the loudest voices do. This “permission dynamic” shows how critical it is for leaders and informal influencers to normalize openness and belonging. As the episode wraps, the message is clear: worth is not something that needs to be earned. It’s intrinsic. From day one, every employee deserves to feel like they belong, not just for their own mental health—but for the health, safety, and performance of the entire team.
